The city council have approved a budget of £1.4 million for the redevelopment of the Bullingdon Community Centre.

The budget for the community centre has been increased by £200,000 to £1,403,000.

The authority planned to replace the community centre after the discovery that it was built on top of a former quarry.

Many councillors and community members believe the Bullingdon Community Centre is an important and vibrant space.

Councillor Christine Simm said: “I very much welcome this development, I’m familiar with the people that run it."

She added: "I’m delighted with the way this has been addressed to involve members of the Bullingdon community within the decision making and I hope that kind of model with involving community members could be used in the future.”

Councillor Marie Tidball highlighted that the community centre has over 60 hours a week of bookings and that the community facilities in the area are limited, she also wants to make the new £1.4 million centre carbon neutral.

She said: “This will be one of the first carbon neutral community centres and this will decrease costs.”

The community centre in Peat Moors is the only one in the area and has around 500 users every week, including the Mencap disabilities group that has been based there since 1963.
