A YEAR of celebrations began on Sunday to mark eight centuries of church and community life in two neighbouring villages.

Kidlington and Hampton Poyle 800 was officially launched at a special service at St Mary’s Church, Kidlington.

Among those present were the Bishop of Oxford, the Rt Rev Steven Croft, who gave the address, and the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Tim Stevenson.

During the service, the theme of which was ‘Sing a New Song to the Lord’, representatives of village groups came forward to display symbols of their work.

The choir sang two anthems, one of which had been specially composed for the occasion by the director of music, Dr David Hewett.

After the service, which was attended by representatives of Hampton Poyle church, also St Mary’s, an 800th birthday cake was cut for those attending.
