COLLEAGUES are 'cycling to Australia' after being shocked by the country's bushfire crisis.

K2 Recruitment in Bicester is fundraising for those fighting the devastating blazes, by holding a sponsored static bike ride this week.

One of their consultants is Australian and his brother, who still lives there, was trapped at home for four days with his wife and their two young children due to the fires.

Cindy Johnson, who works at the company, said: "They had no phone lines, no electricity and no emergency services were able to access them to offer assistance.

"It must have been terrifying.

"We have all been shocked and saddened by the devastation caused and that continues to be caused by these fires.

"At the same time we have been completely overwhelmed by the bravery of the fire service and their commitment to their role in what must be terrifying and treacherous conditions."

A team of 12 employees hopes to jointly cycle the equivalent of 8,593 miles, which is the distance to Broome in Australia.

They have already completed almost 7,000 miles and hope to finish the challenge before the end of Sunday, which is Australia Day - the official national day.

Their efforts have already raised more than £2,000 for the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and Brigades Donation Fund.
