Both are now open to all ages, genders and abilities after entry was opened to men last year.

“We’re sending a heart-felt message to anybody who’s thought about signing up in the past but for one reason or another hasn’t got round to it.

"This is your year – please seize the opportunity to register in January and become part of the Race for Life community."

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help fund research into the disease.

Louise Upton, Oxford City Council Cabinet member for Healthy Oxford, said: "I have had two different cancers in the last 10 years so I fully appreciate the ground-breaking treatments that are available right here in the Churchill Hospital.

"But not everyone survives, so we have to keep funding research and by joining in, and getting a bit of exercise, you will also be lowering your own risk of getting cancer. It’s win-win.”
