OXFORD could soon be brimming with broomsticks and butterbeer as another Harry Potter shop looks to open in the city centre.

A planning application has revealed that a third shop, seemingly dedicated to JK Rowling's wizarding world, is due to move into a historic timber-framed building in Cornmarket Street.

Drawings for the shopfront sign state the name to be House of Wizard, which would be illuminated on a black panel.

Another illuminated sign was labelled on planning documents as the 'Marauder's Map', which was a magic parchment used in Harry Potter to show Hogwarts and its secret passages.

An opening date was not stated, as the business is first seeking permission to make some internal changes to the 15th-century building.

The unit, on the corner of Ship Street, was previously occupied by a tourist ticket and foreign exchange business called Change.

A planning document said tweaks to the interior were 'fundamental to the viability' of the new tenant's business.

It stated: "The historic centre of Oxford forms a masterpiece of European architectural heritage...However, the city is also a major regional commercial centre.

"The curve of the High Street, the market place of St Giles and the older churches, together with the post-medieval timber-framed houses and commercial premises, belong to Oxford’s ‘town’ tradition rather than that of the university ‘gown’ heritage."

Oxford City Council is considering the application, which is for number 28 Cornmarket, and is due to make a decision by January 21.

The applicant was named in planning documents as Z Rahiman Thidil of 47 Cornmarket Street, which is home to the Oxford Gift Shop.

Oxford Preservation Trust, which works to conserve and celebrate the city's rich history, submitted an official response to the application.

In the response, its director Debbie Dance said: "28 Cornmarket is a remarkable survival in the heart of the city, central conservation area and in Cornmarket, where so many buildings have been lost over the years.

"We have been disappointed by the supporting documentation, which suggests the historic significance of this building is not fully recognised...We would suggest caution about changes that could result in the loss of historic fabric."

Potter shops have become a huge draw for tourists in several historic cities in the UK.

The Shambles in York is home to three wizard-themed shops, one of which doubled in size in 2018 due to demand.

The tourism industry in Oxford has started to turn its attention to the city's links to Harry Potter, with several scenes from the film series shot at university buildings.

Experience Oxfordshire runs a dedicated Harry Potter walking tour, with stops at the Bodleian Library, Divinity School, New College Cloisters and Christ Church.

The Shop of Secrets opened in Broad Street in March, while the House of Wonders in Cornmarket Street opened in the run-up to Christmas.

Other businesses including Watsons of Oxford and Flaggs gift shop also stock Potter memorabilia.
