SELFLESS volunteers helped to feed more than 100 people in need, at Oxford Homeless Project's very first Christmas Day meal.

More than 40 volunteers sacrificed their time to bring joy to hungry diners at East Oxford Community Centre on Wednesday, offering a three-course meal and great company.

Shabnam Sabir, co-founder of the project, hailed the day as an 'overwhelming success' despite it being organised in a matter of weeks.

She said: "It was incredible to see just how much people were willing to help others in their times of need.

"The guests said this was always the most difficult day of the year, but they felt like it was truly Christmas because they had a full Christmas dinner, got lots of presents and spent the day with people who were as good as family.

"Many volunteers who helped for the first time said they were truly inspired and were keen to help again in the future."

In previous years Oxford Homeless Project had organised a meal in the run-up to Christmas, but this year there was also one on the day itself.

The team made hampers for emergency services who were working on Christmas Day, gifting them to members of the fire service, A&E workers and police officers.

Attendees sung carols and enjoyed games and music throughout the day.
