QUICK-thinking neighbours doused a caravan with lemonade after a fire broke out on Christmas Day.

Firefighters were called to a caravan fire near Wheatley yesterday, caused by a candle left unattended on a window sill.

Posting on Facebook today, Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Luckily neighbours spotted the fire and put it out with bottles of water and lemonade!

"Using a thermal image camera, we where able to check that the fire was completely out.

"We would like to thank the local community for their help as this could have been much worse.

"Only tackle a fire if it is small and safe to do so."

Crews from Slade Road fire station in Oxford attended, as well as from Wheatley fire station.

They did not specify the location or exact time of the call-out.

In a separate post today, the fire service said it also sent crews to a kitchen fire in Abingdon on Christmas Eve.

It had already been put out on arrival by the homeowner, who had accidentally left the hob on, burning a wooden tray.

They were able to safely switch the hob off and put the tray under cold running water.

The fire service stressed: "Only take firefighting action if it is safe to do so.

"It's more important to get yourself out, warn others and call 999."
