A PRIMARY school in Witney did a Santa run to raise thousands of pounds for a national homeless charity.

West Witney Primary School completed the fun run to raise over £4,000 for Crisis UK.

Children in Years 5 and 6 at the school took part in the sponsored Santa run, with each child running five kilometres.

A statement from the school said: "As part of the Key Stage 2 topic, our Years 5 and 6 children have been reading Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

"In the book, Scrooge states that poor people should go to prison or the workhouse, rather than him give any of his money to charity.

"This led to a discussion amongst the children about giving to charity and that there are still people today that have no food and nowhere to live.

"As a consequence, the children decided to organise a sponsored run to raise money for Crisis UK.

Oxford Mail:

"Between the 87 children they have raised a staggering £4,370.

"This will provide a bed, three hot meals, a haircut and other help and advice for 150 people in need this Christmas."

The pupils' efforts were overseen by Tamara English, a teacher at the school.

Crisis UK was formed in 1967 and opened a service in George Street, Oxford in 2011.

The charity help the homeless find houses and work.
