A MOTORBIKE rider remains in a critical condition in hospital a week after he was involved in a crash on a dangerous stretch of road - where another collision took place just two days later.

The incident happened at the notorious Barnard Gate turn-off, on the A40 between Oxford and Witney last Wednesday morning.

The biker, a 19-year-old man, was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford following the crash, where Thames Valley Police said he remains.

Police said the accident happened at about 8am on Wednesday, when the motorcyclist collided with a silver Volkswagen Golf at the junction near Witney.

The driver of the VW Golf was not injured in the incident.

Traffic was at a complete standstill for a couple of hours during the morning as the road was subsequently blocked in both directions.

Police appealed for dashcam footage or any witnesses from the scene. Since then this paper has been sent shocking footage of the collision, which has been passed to the police.

The crash was yet another unsavoury incident on the same stretch of road.

Three adults and a three-week-old baby were also taken to hospital after a two-car crash on Friday - just two days after the incident with the motorcyclist.

South Central Ambulance Service said it received ‘multiple 999 calls’ at about 7.45am.

The crash took place on the A40 eastbound, also at Barnard Gate.

A spokesman for the service, David Gallagher, said: “Our staff at the scene assessed a total of four patients – three adults and a three-week old baby.

“Fortunately none had sustained serious injuries, but all were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital for further assessment and/or treatment.”

Witney Gazette:

The service sent three ambulances and a paramedic team leader to the scene.

The crash and resultant clear-up caused heavy traffic queues, blocking the A40 in both ways.

The road itself is known for its daily traffic jams and congestion, causing problems for road users. Public transport services are often unable to run to published timetables as a result.

The safety of the road has been questioned with one online commenter saying: ‘Yet another crash at Barnard Gate, the second this week.’

The same commentator described both north and south turns on the road as ‘plain dangerous’.

Further comments described the road as ‘dangerous’ and said the layout of the road has to be changed to prevent further incidents like the ones seen last week.

Former prime minister and Witney MP David Cameron was in favour of turning the A40 into a dual carriageway. He famously described the road as a ‘foot on the windpipe’ of West Oxfordshire’s economy.

Last month, the government granted £102m to turn a section of the A40 between Witney and a proposed park and ride in Eynsham into a dual carriageway.

Police are appealing for anyone with information relating to the motorcyclist incident to contact Thames Valley Police on 101, quoting URN 208 4/12.
