IF YOU had occasion to call the telephone operator on Christmas Eve, 1975, you might have met with some musical 'interference'.
On that afternoon at the Oxford Telephone Exchange in Speedwell Street, between 25 and 30 people were singing carols to the operators.

The singers included members of Cowley Mixed Choir and telephone staff, with the event organised by Norman Bass, the choir's musical director.
After visiting the exchange the singers – who were described as 'very good' by a Post Office spokesman – moved on to nearby Telephone House.
