PLANS which could see hundreds of new homes and space for thousands of jobs built will be decided on by city councillors tomorrow.

The plans for the Oxford North development would see 480 homes and work space for up to 4,500 jobs built on land near the A44 and A40.

A decision on whether the plan should be given the go-ahead was deferred in September.

Oxford City councillors said they wanted more details about whether a planned 35 per cent of affordable housing is the most developer Thomas White Oxford (TWO) could provide.

A report to Oxford City Council's West Area Planning committee ahead of its meeting tomorrow said a financial assessment had been made into the scheme.

The report said the development could 'just afford to provide 35 per cent Affordable Housing'.

But an agreement between the council and TWO, which is owned by St John's College, means the developer would review the costs of building Oxford North each yeah and could possibly increase the number which could be sold at an affordable rate.

This means that 35 per cent would be the minimum number of affordable homes on site.

If the project costs allowed for it, up to 50 per cent of the homes, or 240, could be sold at cheaper than market rate instead.

A spokeswoman for Oxford North said: “From the outset, Oxford North has been about investing in Oxford and making a positive impact on people’s lives and future generations. In the last 10 years, we have worked with the City Council and a range of other bodies to define a scheme that will realise the exciting vision for the area set out in the AAP, while also meeting and wherever possible exceeding relevant technical and environmental standards."

The spokeswoman added TWO wanted to make sure the council received £10m in government funding which had been allocated to help build infrastructure near Oxford North.

They said: “Such national level funding recognises that Oxford North is a scheme of importance to the City, the county and the national economy."

The development will be discussed by councillors on Oxford City Council's West Area Planning committee at the town hall at 6pm tomorrow.
