A MOVING lorry was hit by a brick on the A420 after someone hurled it from a bridge above.

Thames Valley Police issued a witness appeal last night, after the vehicle was damaged on the busy road at about midday on Friday.

The force said 'persons unknown' 'threw' the brick from an over-bridge at Cumnor, near Oxford.

A spokesman told the Oxford Mail the vehicle damaged was a heavy goods vehicle.

The windscreen was cracked but no-one was injured in the incident, he confirmed.

There were two or three people seen on the bridge, but no description is available of the suspects.

Police are investigating criminal damage and have asked anyone with information to call 101, quoting URN 554 22/11/19.

Officers shared the appeal on the TVP South and Vale Facebook page.

Responding to the post, one woman commented: "Such a very dangerous thing to do. Hope they're caught ASAP."

Oxford Mail readers condemned the brick-throwing as 'horrendous' and 'idiotic'.

In 2007, a trucker was killed in Northamptonshire after a brick was dropped from a bridge.

The driver lost control and ended up crashing, and two 15-year-old schoolboys were sentenced following his death

According to a BBC report from the time, the sentencing judge said: "It is very important to dispel any idea that throwing objects from bridges onto roads and railway lines amounts to youthful pranks.

"The dangers of catastrophic consequences if things are thrown is obvious."

In 2003, another lorry driver also died after a brack was thrown at his vehicle on the M3, causing him to suffer a fatal heart attack.
