TWO former Eynsham firefighters, Stuart Smith and Colin Jacob, have published a book documenting the history of their village fire station.

Mr Jacob, a firefighter at Eynsham for over 27 years, and Mr Smith who joined at the age of 46 and served for five years, decided to write the book after initially compiling a Roll of Honour, which listed every man and woman that has served at the station since the formation of an Eynsham Volunteer Fire Brigade in 1936.

Oxford Mail:

Mr Smith said: “When we were researching for the Roll of Honour board we were told so many stories by the retired firefighters and their families that we felt they should be captured and preserved for future generations.

Oxford Mail:

“We never expected it to take us so long though. It has been a labour of love for both of us.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone that has provided us with old photos and press cuttings and we were delighted that the Oxford Mail gave permission for us to publish many of the fantastic photos that we obtained from their archives.”

Oxford Mail:

Entitled Call the Fire Brigade, the ups and downs of the Eynsham village fire crews, the book highlights some of the interesting, humorous, unusual and often heartbreaking incidents that the village fire crews have attended during the last 83 years.

Oxford Mail:

It also gives an insight into the workings of a village fire station; some of the characters that have worked there and how the fire service has changed and adapted throughout this period.

The book costs £15 and is currently on sale at Evenlode DIY in Eynsham or email eynshamfirefighters@btinternet.com to reserve a copy.
