Sir - So Headington roundabout is scary for learner drivers and it makes them apprehensive (Report, October 26). I have had a licence for 50 years and have been driving frequently round that roundabout for 25 of them. Sir, it certainly terrifies me!

It was a cheapskate solution to a problem which would have been much better solved by an underpass or flyover such as the other preceding A40 or M40 junctions as you leave London. All it does is get traffic more quickly past Headington to pile up at the Cutteslowe roundabout before dicing with the difficult and dangerous Wolvercote roundabout - which should also have been underpasses or flyovers.

What a tragedy the dualling of the A40 from Oxford to Burford was so unceremoniously dumped nearly a decade ago. How different life would now be if the "top hat" bypass solution for Oxford had been pursued 20 years ago when it was suggested.

In the meantime, we poor inhabitants who live west of Oxford have to put up with minimal bus services, no bus lanes and chaos caused by the Eynsham and Cassington junctions when we try to drive eastwards to, or westwards from, Oxford other than in the middle of the night or about 11am. It just is not good enough!
