A YOUTH club conscious of the environment has raised more than £400 to fund reusable plates, bowls and cutlery.

Rose Hill Junior Youth Club in Oxford, based at Rose Hill Community Centre, has hit its target after launching a GoFundMe campaign this month.

Writing on the fundraising page, youth club worker Trevor Williams said: "We are very keen to stop using the dreaded polystyrene plates, bowls and cutlery at the youth club sessions.

"With the help of the Local Rose Hill and Iffley Low Carbon (RHILC), we have set up a fundraising page and we now need your help."

In just over a week, the club had exceeded its £400 target by £20.

Eleanor Watts, of Rose Hill & Iffley Low Carbon, wrote on the page: "Fantastic! I think it would be great to get rid of the disposable plates and get quality reusable ones."

More than 180 children attend the youth club each week, according to a video filmed to accompany the campaign.

A hot buffet-style meal is served at each session, to stop children from going hungry, and currently disposable plates, bowls and cutlery are used and then binned at the end.

In May the youth club earned a five-star hygiene score from Oxford City Council, and was praised by a councillor for its work to provide fresh and nutritious meals for children using surplus food.
