A NURSERY that was rated 'inadequate' earlier this year has raised its standards.

Ofsted has revisited Bright Horizons Oxford Waterways Day Nursery and Preschool, and given a rating of 'good'.

The nursery in Summertown had been given the regulator's worst rating in May, after concerns were raised about staff 'compromising' children's welfare and failing to provide good role models.

The new report, published today, said: "Managers have made effective improvements since the last inspection.

"They have reflected well to help them develop and raise the quality of the provision successfully.

"Staff plan an effective curriculum and provide activities that capture children's interest and engagement in learning well."

The nursery in Clear Water Place was rated 'requires improvement' in 2014, 'inadequate' in 2015 then 'good' later that year, before going back down to 'inadequate' in May of this year.

It had 125 children on roll in May, which had plummeted to 87 during the latest inspection on September 30.

Inspectors said staff had 'undertaken a wide range of training to update their understanding about safeguarding' since the last visit, adding: "Staff have a strong understanding of their responsibilities to protect children from harm."

They were also impressed by staff demonstrating how they 'highly value children's individual backgrounds,' for example singing songs and reading stories in other languages children speak.

The report added: "They sensitively support children, such as building children's confidence when they are unsure about taking part in activities.

"Staff's good teaching helps children to make the progress they are capable of and gain skills to succeed in the future."

Nursery manager Sylvie Ellier-Bogue said: "We have worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome from Ofsted, and I am so happy that the passion and dedication that my team show each and every day has shone through.

"As well as my team I would like to thank all of our families with whom we have a fantastic partnership.

"We now look forward to continuing to support the children to achieve their very best potential and to begin their lifelong love of learning with us."

Bright Horizons runs about a dozen branches in Oxfordshire, most of which hold 'good' Ofsted ratings.

The childcare chain had previously said it was 'disappointed,' when the earlier rating was published.
