ACTIVISTS will gather in a town centre today to show solidarity with climate rebels in London.

The Extinction Rebellion Abingdon group will hold banners and flags in Market Place, from 10am until 11am, in support of the thousands of activists from the same movement who have been causing disruption in the capital.

Although some members have made the trip to take part in the two-week protest, those unable to attend are staging their own public demonstration.

The first public action in Abingdon was held in September, when protesters dressed in animals masks played 'musical chairs' then pretended to die.

Today's action will see them raise awareness of the Abingdon XR group as well as show solidarity with protesters from Extinction Rebellion in London.

This week the capital has been overrun by thousands of activists, who are occupying key sites to call for action.

The Oxford Mail is aware of at least a dozen Oxfordshire arrests at the London protests so far this week, of more than 1,100 detained by Metropolitan Police.

According to a Facebook post from Extinction Rebellion Wantage yesterday, six people from Wantage have been arrested in the capital.

At least two from the West Oxfordshire group have also been arrested, according to a separate post.

The county's climate rebels moved from St James' Park to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens yesterday, after police started clearing the former.

A mass cycle protest organised by Extinction Rebellion had been due to disrupt rush hour traffic in Oxford yesterday evening, but was postponed because there were not enough marshals to ensure participants' safety.

Crowds of climate activists blocked the entrance to the BBC's central London headquarters yesterday, with some scaling the front of the building.

Metropolitan Police chief Cressida Dick said the force has been 'stretched' by Extinction Rebellion protests this week, impeding its ability to respond to other crimes.
