MEMBERS of Oxford's Kurdish community are holding a demonstration in the city centre this evening.

Kurds and supporters announced a plan to gather at Martyr's Memorial at the bottom of St Giles at 7pm.

The action is in solidarity with Kurds in Rojava, northern Syria, after Turkish forces invaded the region following President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw US troops.

Oxford demo organiser Rojeen Qaqu said: "We are calling upon the Oxford community to rise up for Rojava due to the Turkish military invasion."

She said the Turkish forces had invaded the region to effectively 'ethnically cleanse the Kurdish people who defeated ISIS'.

Her group urged Oxford locals to join the demonstration.

Oxford East Labour MP Anneliese Dodds publicised the event on Twitter saying: "Dozens of my constituents have contacted me with their deep concerns about the impact of the US President's withdrawal of troops and the subsequent military invasion by Turkey.
