RESIDENTS have had their first glimpse of plans for a £10m revamp of a run-down Oxford community centre.

Oxford City Council held an engagement event featuring designs for East Oxford Community Centre last week and people can submit comments online until Monday.

It was an opportunity for community groups and residents to see the architectural plans and give feedback.

Despite an initial public consultation being held three years ago work had been stalled on the project while the city council and Oxfordshire County Council considered sharing the space.

This was ultimately rejected, with the redevelopment now set to see the Chinese Community Centre and the Fusion Arts buildings demolished and replaced with a new three-storey building featuring purpose-built space for Fusion Arts and Film Oxford, as well as flexible community space and office areas.

The Old School building will also be completely refurbished to create a new kitchen, toilets and more flexible community spaces.

The site is in need of development due to ageing buildings on the site being no longer usable.

The 'B Block', which was demolished last year

Part of the Chinese Community Centre has been condemned and is no longer open to the public, and the old ‘B Block’ had to be demolished last year.

Around 150 people took part in the engagement event on September 20.

There will be another chance to get involved on November 12 when the council will show revised plans in response to community feedback.

Marie Tidball, Cabinet member for supporting local communities, said: “I was really pleased to see so many people taking an interest in our plans for the redevelopment.

“I heard a range of views and issues raised, and the overall feeling I got was that people are passionate about having a strong community centre that provides for a diverse area.”

She added: “This is what we believe the redeveloped centre can deliver, we’re looking at how to take forward the specific feedback and will be showing how we’ve included that to adapt our plans at the event on November 12.”

People can provide feedback until Monday via the website or by handing in printed forms to the community centre by the same date.
