THE Osney Mead industrial estate is hardly the most picturesque location for a new cafe.

But the warm welcome and tasty menu at Spring Greens is attracting more customers daily and some lunchtimes diners are queueing out the door.

The eatery in west Oxford has been launched by chef Paul Spring and businessman Mark Green - hence the name Spring Greens.

Oxford Mail:

The pair met when they were pals at school and afterwards dreamed they would one day start a catering business together.

Mr Spring’s promise in cookery competitions led him to a career as a chef which, at one point, took him all the way to a hotel kitchen in New South Wales, Australia.

On his return he linked up with his old school friend and they came up with the idea for the cafe on the estate where Mr Green, 50, owns units housing environmentally-friendly businesses including laundry company Oxwash and driverless cars firm StreetDrone.

Oxford Mail:

Mr Spring, 51, who lives in South Oxfordshire, said: “We opened this summer and the reception from people working on the estate has been fantastic.

“We can seat about 24 people inside and about 16 at the tables we have outside, which have been very popular throughout the summer.

Oxford Mail:

“We knew there would be demand before we opened because there are lots of people working on this trading estate and there’s nothing else quite like this around here.

“We now have lots of customers who are regulars and come back two or three times a week.

“Of course there are people who haven’t heard about us yet and we want to let them know we are here.”

Oxford Mail:

Mr Green, 50, from Horspath, said some residents from nearby Osney Island have dropped in to try out the menu.

He added: “I think it’s good for people working in offices on the estate to take time out and have some food away from their desks.”

Mr Spring has devised a menu of dishes using local ingredients which cater for workers throughout the day, Monday to Friday.

Oxford Mail:

The breakfast menu is served all day, while the lunch menu is served from 11.30am. As well as bacon and sausage baps, breakfast dishes include smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (£5.95), full English (£7.95), and smashed avocado topped with poached egg (£5.45).

For lunch, customers can order hot beef salad (£9.50), spicy chicken salad (£8.95), salmon salad (£10.50) and halloumi salad (£8.75), plus there are a range of specials daily, featuring dishes including baked potato and macaroni cheese, plus a variety of sandwiches and rolls.

Oxford Mail:

The cafe has a five-star rating on TripAdvisor and is currently ranked 278 out of 494 restaurants. Jude from Aberdeen wrote: “Had a delicious homemade chicken curry and aubergine pasty! So full of flavour! Lovely friendly service.”
