A MAN booted a reveller at an Oxfordshire festival in the head as if ‘kicking a penalty’ during a brawl, a court has heard.

Tom Aldworth, of Miles East, Didcot, denies one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Prosecutors at Oxford Crown Court claim the 34-year-old kicked his victim Alan Lobb during a fight at Wallingford's Bunkfest music festival on September 2, 2017.

Outlining the case at the start of his trial yesterday, prosecutor Alexandra Bull called the alleged violence ‘pure aggression.’

She told jurors that the build-up to the fight had been an ‘altercation’ which took place at the Bell pub in Crowmarsh Gifford.

That incident, she said, involved Mr Lobb and a relative of Aldworth’s, which ultimately led to the later alleged fight at the festival at about 7pm.

As that brawl was coming to an end, jurors were told, Aldworth ‘from a distance of about 10 yards’ kicked his victim ‘forcibly to the head.’

The court heard that eyewitnesses went on to describe the kick to Mr Lobb’s head as like ‘kicking a penalty’.

Jurors were told that after police arrived Aldworth was arrested and found to have blood on his shoe.

Ms Bull said that forensic examination of that blood was found to be a match for Aldworth’s alleged victim.

She also revealed that while Aldworth did not give any comment to police at an initial interview, in a defence statement he claimed that he had kicked Mr Lobb but because he was ‘defending’ his relative.

Ms Bull added: “He did say in doing so he had not aimed for Mr Lobb’s head.”

She went on: “This was not defence of another, this was an act of pure aggression.”

The trial continues.
