A POST Office branch will reopen again for the first time in nearly three years.

The East Oxford branch will properly open again in October 9, but this time in a new location.

It will now be based in the Zenobia Food Store on St Clements Street.

The shop, hailed a 'vital public service' in the area closed for the last time in November 2016, because of 'operational reasons'.

The post office used to be on Cowley Road, but has been 'temporarily closed' since.

On the back of the closure, councillors for the area Tom Hayes and Jamila Azad ran a 'lengthy campaign' alongside residents and community groups in the St Clements ward to save the office from closing, dubbing the branch a community hub.

Ms Azad said: "Local residents have been very clear about the need to bring back a post office.

"I’m delighted that the Post Office has listened to local councillors and the community by returning a vital public service.

"A post office is not just a place for sending parcels; it brings all of the communities of East Oxford together.”

The new revamped office will now be open for more than 60 hours a week, offering shoppers cash withdrawals, currency exchange, sending post and home shopping collections and returns.

Mr Hayes added: “The importance of bringing back a local Post Office cannot be overstated.

"The efforts of the local community and councillors, working closely together, have helped to restore a much-needed postal service to our community, and will spare people from having to travel to faraway postal branches to send off parcels.”

Post Office's Graham Simmons said: "We are delighted to be restoring a Post Office to this area of Oxford.

"This branch will also be open longer hours than before.

"We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mails and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.

"We are confident that this vibrant new-style Post Office at the heart of the local community will meet how important these services are to local residents."

The branch will be known as St Clements Street Post Office, and will be open longer hours from Monday to Friday from 9am until 7.30pm and on Saturday from 9am until 5pm.
