OXFORDSHIRE'S 'biggest charity event' is set to smash its £1m fundraising target as the final vehicles in a crazy convoy of cars reserve their places on the starting grid.

The fourth and final Twin Town Challenge will see 100 cars costing less than £500 each drive from Blenheim Palace to Witney's twin town of Le Touquet in May 2020.

Once they get there, they will spend a weekend taking on hilarious, fun-based challenges, all clad in costumes with a 'Battle of the Bands' theme.

The fun and games are all for a good cause, with the three previous biennial events raising £840,000 combined for Charlbury-based charity SpecialEffect.

The fundraising total is expected to soon reach the £1m mark and organiser Brendan Cross urged potential participants to book one of the remaining 12 places.

He said: “It's the biggest charity event in Oxfordshire. The Twin Town Challenge is an amazing sight with 100 cars, 400 people in fancy dress and more than 50 volunteers."

Oxford Mail:

The cars will leave Blenheim on Friday, May 1 and travel across the English Channel to Le Touquet, in northern France.

After arriving, the programme of events includes challenges, a day at the Abbeville race circuit and a street party in the town centre, before vehicles return to West Oxfordshire on the Monday.

Teams are already starting to plan their car decorations and fancy dress, with participants previously bringing vehicles such as London taxis, stretch limos and Scooby Doo’s Mystery Machine

Oxford Mail:

All event costs will be covered by sponsorship, so every pound paid in entry fees and cash raised by teams goes straight to SpecialEffect, which uses technology to enhance the lives of people with physical disabilities.

Mr Cross, the charity's vice president, said: “We are very lucky that so many businesses from the games industry and local Oxfordshire businesses give so generously to sponsor this event.

"Their generosity enables us to cover the costs of the Eurotunnel crossings, the hire of the venues and to feed all the participants during the weekend.”

Oxford Mail:

Mick Donegan, founder and CEO of SpecialEffect, said: “The legacy of each Twin Town Challenge continues long after the event itself as businesses keep on supporting us.

"We are entirely dependent on donations to carry on our work, so events like this are our lifeblood.

"To think that the organisers are hoping to raise over £1m for us is unbelievable. We cannot thank the Twin Town community enough for their passion and generosity.”

Previous events have enabled SpecialEffect to establish a games room for young people, to buy new vehicles and to take on more specialist staff to meet the growing demand for its support and services.
