A TIRED participant in a 1960s dance marathon took a well-deserved swig of Corona Limeade as he hit the halfway mark.

Mike Ashfield was among those who completed a six-hour rock'n'roll danceathon at Cowley Church Youth Clubs, in April 1960.

Club members staged the event as their Easter activity, and 30 couples took part.

It took place at St James' Hall in Between Towns Road, and dancers were allowed a three-minute break each hour.

According to the report, they refuelled on ice lollies and chewing gum during the rest.

Just two couples did not complete the challenge, and the first to drop out were named and shamed as Peter Smith and Violet Hinton.

Heather Simpson was included in report as 'the only casualty of the day,' as she promptly fainted after the six-hour session came to a close.

Prizes were then awarded to those who completed the challenge, with first prize given to Joan Busby and David Herbert.

The event was hailed such a success that organisers were already considering arranging another later that year.
