A MUSEUM will create a pop-up cafe at an East Oxford church.

The Rumble Museum, based at Cheney School in Headington, will run the cafe every Saturday afternoon in September and October.

It will be hosted by St Alban's Church in Charles Street, and is open for visitors of all ages to explore.

The museum has designed educational trails and colouring activities for children, and the cafe will offer a range of drinks and cakes.

Visitors will be able to take in the church's art, architecture and history, as well as a range of artefacts.

The Museum Café initially ran as a trial project for two weeks in July and August, at the same venue.

More than 100 people visited during that period, and got to see various Roman artefacts from the Rumble Museum's collection.

These included a replica shield, helmet, strigil, oil lamp, wax tablet, brooch, and original pieces of pottery excavated from Headington and Marston, as well as an original quern stone and hand stone.

During this month and next, the cafe will display artefacts from different eras and themes, including the stone age, Greek, Roman, medical, astronomical and women's suffrage items.

The cafe will be open from 2pm until 5pm, and the first theme for this Saturday is the stone age.

On September 14 it will have extended opening hours of 10am until 5pm, to coincide with Oxford Open Doors.

During that time, St Alban's Church will also be welcoming local people to share their views on how they would like to see the church being used.

The church opened as St Alban's Mission Church in 1889, on the corner of Catherine Street and Charles Street.

In the late 1920s, Father Richard Lewis started the St Alban's Scouts, raised money for a new church on the site of the Mission Church, and commissioned Lawrence Dale to design a building for 390 people.

The angels at the entrance to the church were carved by John Brookes, who later became principal of the technical college in Cowley Road - since renamed and relocated as Brookes University.
