A WOULD-BE rapist who 'strangled' a woman during a violent sex attack after a night out has been convicted.

Khaled Meridja, of Brampton Road, Oxford, had denied one count of attempted rape, one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two of sexual assault.

Prosecutors during his trial at Oxford Crown Court said the 28-year-old had met his victim while she was out with a friend in Oxford on the night of October 21 last year.

Meridja, together with his victim and her friend, went to his Oxford home.

While upstairs in the house Meridja began sexually assaulting her, before going on to 'strangle' his victim in an attempted rape.

Detailing her ordeal the woman - who cannot be named for legal reasons - said it made her feel like she was 'going to die.'

She said: “[Meridja] was grabbing hold of my breasts and I [said] ‘what the hell are you doing get off me’ and then he pushed me up against the wall.

“Then he was strangling me so much I could not breathe. He was just strangling me and I didn’t know what to do.”

After four hours and 31 minutes of deliberations jurors found him unanimously guilty of all counts on Tuesday. The case was adjourned for sentencing while a report is prepared to assess if he presents a 'danger' to the public.

He will be sentenced at the same court on October 18.
