TERRIFIED shop keepers dived for cover and screamed when two armed raiders opened fire at an Oxford supermarket.

The six shots were fired at Gateway Foodmarkets store in Headington on November 27, 1989, when the store was filled with customers.

The shots rang out after a brave security guard threw one of the bags of money which he was taking out of the supermarket back into the building to stop it being stolen.

The bag landed among the shoppers.

The two raiders then seemed to panic and fled across the car park behind the supermarket, pursued by the supermarket staff.

They escaped with one plastic bag containing £15,000 cash.

No-one was injured.

The raid happened at about 4.30pm at the main entrance to the store off Old High Street as the security guard was bringing the day's takings out to his van.

The two raiders, who were not wearing masks, attacked the guard just inside the shop entrance and took one of the cash bags from him.

From eyewitness accounts, police established that both men were armed with handguns and a total of six shots were fired.
