ARMY veterans gathered to unveil a memorial plinth at the site of the former Cowley Barracks.
Members of the Oxford branch of the Royal Green Jackets were at the site in James Wolfe Road today where student blocks have been built for Oxford Brookes University.
Two old barrack blocks off Hollow Way have been demolished and Terry Roper, chairman of the Oxford branch of the Royal Green Jackets Association, said he was delighted to see a memorial to the barracks – once the home of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry.
Veterans were joined by developers Unite Students and Oxford Brookes University staff.
The unveiling was carried out by General Bob Pascoe and Pte Reg Charles, a Normandy veteran. The barracks were on site until 1958.
