An Oxford University academic, considered to be one of the most important scholars of ancient philosophy in recent times, has died aged 67.
Prof Michael Frede made major contributions to the field of Classical Platonic and Aristotelian thought.
Born in Berlin on May 31, 1940, his first year in Oxford was 1962 to 1963, where he worked with the academics JL Ackrill and GEL Gill.
After Oxford, he moved back to Germany to take up a post as an assistant from 1966 to 1971.
In 1976, Dr Frede was appointed professor in the history of philosophy department at Oxford.
This was a post he would go on to hold until 1991, while also being a professor of philosophy at Princeton, in America.
During this time, Dr Frede also became a fellow of Keble College, before retiring from Oxford in 2005 to teach in Athens.
He has been described by friends and colleagues as a professional man, who also had a warmer side.
On August 11, Dr Frede drowned while swimming at sea.
