A DISTRICT council has appealed to local authorities across Oxfordshire to help it tackle the climate emergency.

West Oxfordshire District Council passed a motion at a meeting on July 31 calling for a Local Nature Partnership for the county.

The council's head of paid service, Giles Hughes, will now write to Oxfordshire's county and district councils asking for cross-party support.

Council leader, James Mills, who proposed the motion alongside cabinet member for environment, Norman MacRae, said: “Environmental issues have rightly become a key policy focus both locally and nationally, and so we are delighted to have affirmed our commitment to establishing a Local Nature Partnership for Oxfordshire.

"This will not only be key to helping us deliver the government’s national environmental objectives, but also enable us to maximise positive environmental outcomes for West Oxfordshire.

“We look forward to working alongside other local authorities, LEPs, and other local stakeholders within the wider Oxford-Cambridge Arc to drive this initiative forward.”

The district council declared a climate emergency in June and has set out a range of steps to help West Oxfordshire achieve its target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030.
