OXFORD is one expensive place to live, as anyone who has ever tried to get on the housing ladder will tell you.

In fact, the latest Zoopla Cities Index puts the city in third place nationally, with only London and Cambridge boasting a higher average house price.

Oxford's average price now stands at £404,300.

But what about the other end of the scale, the top of the money tree? How much do they cost?

The Oxford Mail has delved into data held by the Land Registry to compile a list of the 20 most expensive houses ever sold in the city.

When we say ever, we mean since Land Registry data began being charted digitally in 1999. Therefore, there is a chance that sales pre-dating this time may have topped the list.

But with house prices in Oxford rising 308 per cent in 20 years, it's unlikely.

Earlier this year we brought you the five most expensive streets in Oxford, according to Zoopla

They are:

  1. Bradmore Road
  2. Crick Road
  3. Chadlington Road
  4. Linton Road
  5. Northmoor Road

It's perhaps unsurprising that all five roads feature on the list of the top 20 most expensive properties ever sold.

For this data, we searched all single detached, semi-detached, terraced and flat/maisonette properties purchased since data was compiled on the Land Registry site since 1999. The list does not include commercial property.

Some of these houses have been sold multiple times, but those sales featured on this list are the costliest.
