AN Oxford city centre street is set to remain closed for 'several days' after another sinkhole appeared overnight.

Walton Street was closed both ways yesterday after several sinkholes developed, with Oxfordshire County Council confirming another hole 'revealed itself' during resurfacing works last night.

The newest sinkhole is located near the junction of Worcester Street, with maintenance teams carrying out further investigations before the hole is filled.

The road closure is in place at the junction with Worcester Street and yesterday caused delays in the area.

A county council spokesperson said: "Overnight resurfacing works have uncovered a further hole under Walton Street near the junction of Worcester Street.

"The road remains closed this morning to enable the site to be made safe and for further investigations to be carried out.

"Once these investigations have been carried out, the hole will be filled before surfacing works are completed.

"The road is likely to remain closed for several days."

Four sinkholes were believed to have appeared yesterday, in an area where contractors were in the middle of resurfacing works.

It comes less than a month after a sinkhole opened up just metres along the road in Worcester Street.
