A SOUTH Oxfordshire councillor was caught up in an internet storm after she said she would not date anyone who had voted for Brexit.

Alexandrine Kantor, who represents Wheatley, was one of more than 1,000 people to reply to a question from journalist Rachel Thompson who asked whether Brexit had affected their sex lives.

Ms Kantor said she ‘could not have a relationship’ with someone who voted in favour of Brexit ‘or have close family in law who voted to leave’.

She added: “My new boyfriend is actively pro-remain and pro-EU citizens and such a decent person overall.”

Harry Cole, deputy political editor of the Mail on Sunday, replied: “Imagine being this lame.”

Ms Kantor, who is a senior electrical designer at Culham Science Centre, replied: “Thank you for being so interested in my love life.

“I guess my political views are not very attractive to you and most of your followers as well with all the hate I receive.”

She said the impact of the Brexit vote in 2016 changed EU citizens’ lives: “Before the referendum no one cared who I was, I was French, I was not very interested in politics.

“I was just living here because I like the UK. You feel like something has broken – I feel not like one of us, I feel like one of them. No one really mentioned the accent and when you’re going back [to France] and that started after the vote.”

Ms Kantor added: “The reason I wanted to highlight was the personal side.

“I really wanted to show politicians have very personal views and feelings and that is why I wanted to share this.

“As an EU citizen I have a personal relationship with Brexit.”

She joined the Lib Dems a week after the Brexit referendum in June 2016 and defeated the Conservatives in Wheatley to secure a place on South Oxfordshire District Council in May.
