FIREARMS applicants in Oxfordshire will from tomorrow have to pay for their GP to fill in a special medical form, before police can consider granting them a licence.

Previously applicants only had to list relevant medical conditions plus their GP practice for the police to chase up.

Thames Valley Police announced in June it was changing its firearms licensing policy to introduce a 'pre-application medical screening.'

The form has been agreed between Thames Valley Police and the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Local Medical Committees (LMCs), and applicants are able to download it from the force's website or directly from their GP.

The new form will be requested of all firearm and shotgun applications, including renewals, whether the person declares a medical condition or not.

From August 1, any applications received without the required medical information will be returned to the applicant.
