TEENAGERS from Oxford have joined 45,000 scouts from around the world at a camp in the US this summer.

Siobhan Murray, 17, Poppy Howells, 14, and Tasha Harris, 14, are taking part in the World Scout Jamboree, a skills and adventure festival which is this year being held in West Virginia.

They are part of a group of 5,000 scouts from the UK, including 36 from Oxfordshire, taking part in the event, which brings together young people from 150 countries for the two-week camp.

The event, which only happens every four years, was opened by UK Chief Scout Bear Grylls last week.

He said it was a 'journey of a lifetime' for those taking part and was a 'festival of peace, friendship and adventure'.

Attendees get the chance to try everything from water sports and being part of a global music group, to taking part in a Model United Nations.

Siobhan said: "I’m trying loads of new things at the Jamboree as well as meeting hundreds of new friends from all over the world."

Poppy added she had 'definitely changed' because of the experience, saying: "It has been really nice to chat to people and hear what they get up to in their countries."

The Jamboree ends on Friday.
