A string of fiddlers are making tracks for Germany this week, to celebrate Oxford making 60 years of 'sweet music' with Bonn.

Eleven of the 25-strong Oxford Fiddle Group are joining pupils from Oxford Community School, civic leaders and artists on a visit to mark the diamond anniversary of the twinning link between the cities.

Jed Mugford, leader of the Oxford Fiddlers, said: "This is the first time the group has visited Bonn and we're really looking forward to it.

"We're booked to play at a barn dance, as well as playing on a Rhine cruise, and we will be treating our German twins to some lively, traditional Oxford music."

The visit is one of a series of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the link between Oxford and the former West German capital.

In May, Oxford hosted Burgerfest, a day-long extravaganza of music, marching bands and street theatre at Oxford Castle.

This was followed by a diamond jubilee concert at the Town Hall, where choirs from Oxford and Bonn performed Mozart's Requiem.

Leading the celebrations, Oxford's Lord Mayor John Tanner also unveiled a specially designed stained glass window in the Town Hall, created by Oxford-based Flemish artist Vital Peeters - who also designed a window for last year's diamond jubilee celebrations of the link between Oxford and Leiden in Holland.

A twin window will be installed in Bonn City Hall this week.

The first Oxford delegation visited Bonn in April 1948 and, since then, thousands of people have taken part in exchanges.
