OXFORD’S new £30m Courtyard by Marriott hotel has opened for business and offers guests stunning rooftop views of historic buildings in the city.

The hotel in Paradise Street close to the city centre has 140 bedrooms and its opening gives the tourist trade a major boost.

Oxford Mail:

The original application for the new building was approved in May 2017 and the hotel has been built on the site of the former Cooper Callas building, with about 35 new jobs created.

One of the hotel’s standout features is its rooftop garden and terrace, which has views of historic Oxford, including Oxford Castle and St George’s Tower.

Guests will also be able to spot the Westgate Centre.

Oxford Mail:

General manager Kaushik Subramanian, who has previously managed the Crowne Plaza at Heythrop Park, said he was delighted the four-star hotel was now open for bookings.

Oxford Mail:

He added: “We have very modern rooms with air conditioning and all the latest features.

“Our rooftop terrace gives guests lovely views of Oxford Castle.

“The hotel is in a great location - it’s so close to the city but once you get outside it’s so quiet and quaint.”

Oxford Mail:

Mr Subramanian said rooms, which all have ensuite showers, could be booked in advance from about £140 to 250 for a standard double.

He added: “We are talking with the Westgate Centre to make sure we interact with the shopping centre and all its restaurants and bars.

“We will see how we can work together so that we can direct our guests to the Westgate.”

Oxford Mail:

Mr Subramanian said he was pleased the hotel was now ready to welcome guests.

He added: “Oxford is a tough place when it comes to planning so we did face certain challenges.

“We think the new roof garden and terrace is fantastic and gives guests a great opportunity to see views of historic Oxford.”

Oxford Mail:

Operations manager Louise Bird said the roof garden and terrace had been landscaped with lots of greenery so that it would not adversely affect visitors’ views when they were on the Castle Mound or other vantage points.

Dominvs Group is to run the hotel under the Courtyard by Marriott brand.

The site was identified by the council for redevelopment within the West End Area Action Plan. Developers said the designs for the building mirrored the brickwork and fenestration in the surrounding streets, and were backed by Historic England.

Jay Ahluwalia said earlier on behalf of Dominvs Group: “We are delighted that this proposal has been deemed acceptable in both economic and heritage terms. The detail of the scheme has evolved following consultation with officers at the city council along with officers from Historic England.”

Hayley Beer-Gamage, chief executive of tourism group Experience Oxfordshire, earlier welcomed the new hotel and said the network of hotels at the ‘upper end of the market’ was helping to encourage people to stay longer and spend more money.
