A FRESH-faced Oxford University student who went on to become a well-known historian protested over the introduction of tuition fees 20 years ago.

An archived picture shows BBC presenter Dan Snow MBE carrying a woman on his shoulders at a demonstration against Labour's introduction of a £1,000 fee.

Oxford students had refused to pay fees and threatened 'legitimate civil disobedience', including occupations, during a prolonged period of activism against the policy.

The photo caption, dated January 22, 1999, says: "none fee paying students", in reference to Oxford threatening students with suspension for not paying.

Mr Snow, who is also the son of journalist Peter Snow, the great-great grandson of former British prime minister David Lloyd George and related to Channel 4's Jon Snow, went on to compete in the boat race before presenting various documentaries and writing a number of history books.

When asked about the picture he said: "Oh my god. That is so funny."
