OXFORDSHIRE could see a heatwave next week, with the county set to bask in temperatures of 30C plus.

Tuesday looks set to be the hottest day, but temperatures throughout the week are unseasonably warm, as many head off on summer holidays.

In Oxford, the city could see the mercury hit 31C on Tuesday, with temperatures in the following few days hitting the mid to high 20s.

To officially be classes as a 'heatwave' , a UK location has to record at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold, which varies by county.

That threshold is based on the expected conditions of the area at that time of year. In Oxfordshire, it is 27C.

The Met Office is forecasting that Oxford will see temperatures of 26C, 31C, 29C and 27C on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Met Office forecaster Sophie Yeomans explained: "It all depends on Thursday - there is a chance we could get some fresher air and if that happen it might be a little cooler.

"(But) I would say there is a good chance of a heatwave in Oxfordshire."

In its regional forecast for today to Wednesday, The Met Office adds: "Dry Monday and Tuesday with plenty of sunshine and becoming very warm.

"Remaining very warm on Wednesday but cloudier with the risk of a thunderstorm."
