A CURIOUS new space where audiences can escape to ahead of performances has been launched at the New Theatre, Oxford.

The Wonder Bar, which takes inspiration from Alice in Wonderland, opened this week with an 'extra-special' tea party bursting with teapot cocktails, cupcakes and croquet.

The transformed space, previously the Balcony Bar, is filled with 'topsy-turvy quirkiness' – from curious eat-me treats to top hats, teacups and playing cards.

The Wonder Bar will be open to ticket holders pre-show and during the interval as well as being used for a programme of its own events.

It will also be available for private hire to outside organisations.

Theatre manager Alice Pegrum said: “The theme of Alice in Wonderland is perfect for the Wonder Bar. It has strong Oxford connections and is incredibly theatrical, which is perfect for us.

Review: Joseph at the New Theatre

“The launch party was a huge success and we had some wonderful feedback on the look of the bar from our guests. We’re now looking forward to audiences making use of this fantastic space.

“The team here at the theatre have creatively worked together to transform this underused area into an amazing space with plenty of things to catch your attention.

"You really do notice something new every time you go in there.”
