AN Oxford resident has told of the 'chaotic' scene after a car 'going over 70mph' crashed in a residential street in Headington.

Police have arrested a man following the incident at around 7pm yesterday evening, which involved 'three or four cars' in Valentia Road, near Oxford Brookes University.

The neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said he heard the 'screech' of brakes last 'a good couple of seconds', in the incident, after which one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Oxford Mail:

They explained: "I saw everything except the actual crash itself (although God knows I heard it, sent me running to the window)... the scene was pretty chaotic."

Last night, a separate witness told this paper that a man had been pinned to the ground after the incident. A man said his wife witnessed the collision and that two men got out of the car and both ran away, after the car drove 'in excess of 70mph' down the street.

However, the other neighbour continued: "I didn't see anyone being pinned down from my bird's-eye view at the window. It definitely wouldn't surprise me to learn that the driver was going (over) 70mph though, the screech I heard when he lost control lasted a good couple of seconds so he must have been going pretty quickly.

"I called 999 as soon as I saw what had happened, and two ambulances arrived very quickly along with two fire engines."

Oxford Mail:

Thames Valley Police spokesman James Williams said a 23-year-old man from Oxford has been arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop following a road traffic collision and drink-driving.

He explained: "We were called to this incident at 7.03pm yesterday, after reports that a vehicle had left the road and collided with a property.

"(The man) has been released under investigation."

The neighbour added: "The police didn't arrive until about half an hour later, which is another reason why I have my doubts about someone being pinned down until the police arrived, as most of the onlookers had dispersed by that time."

South Central Ambulance Service's David Gallagher said: "We were contacted by Thames Valley Police at 7.02pm yesterday informing us of a three-four vehicle collision on Valentia Road.

"We sent one ambulance to the scene and one patient with minor injuries was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital."

Another picture shows firefighters taking photographs of a badly-damaged black car, the rear of which is completely destroyed.

Two silver cars, which appear to be a VW Golf and Ford Focus, also seem to be damaged.

"No persons needed rescuing and we made the scene safe, closing the incident at 7.50pm.

"Two fire engines and a specialist rescue unit from Kidlington attended. Thames Valley Police investigating."
