NEW student accommodation in East Oxford is now months from completion following a major construction project.

The Dorothy Wadham Building in Iffley Road has been built for Wadham College on the site of a former VW showroom, which was occupied by a group of homeless people for about two months until they were ordered to leave in February 2017.

Construction work started in March 2017 and the accommodation, designed by architects Allies and Morrison, is due for completion in time for the start of the academic year in October.

Oxford Mail:

The site was covered with information boards about the scheme but they have now been removed and passers-by can see clearly the building’s design.

The college said earlier the building was designed to ‘blend with other buildings in the local area in terms of external appearance and materials used’.

The accommodation will be car-free and bicycle storage is being provided.

As well as a porters’ lodge the building will have CCTV, a resident site manager and a Sub Dean to ensure that the college’s code of behaviour is maintained at all times.

There will also be a courtyard garden, a garden room/TV lounge, a computer room and laundry room.

Oxford Mail:

The college website said: “Comprising of 135 en-suite bedrooms arranged in cluster flats of between 4-7 rooms, sharing a cluster common room and kitchen/dining space, it is the perfect setting for summer schools and residential programmes.

“The secure and fully wheelchair accessible site has cluster flats arranged around a beautiful garden quad, providing a tranquil green space in a busy and vibrant city.

“The Garden Room is a large seminar space that is used for breakfast service – other meals can be arranged – and can be converted into teaching spaces - or a large common room for the remainder of the day.

Oxford Mail:

“In addition there is a pay as you go laundry, computer room and secure bicycle storage.”
