THE FIRST electric Mini will be unveiled to the world today 60 years after the first Mini rolled off the line.

The 100 per cent battery-powered car has been in the pipeline for years and will be unveiled at the Cowley plant.

German company bosses announced in July 2017 that the new battery-electric, three-door hatch would go into production in Oxford in 2019.

The confirmation came after months of speculation about where the electric model would be built with suggestions that Britain’s decision to leave the EU could impact investment in Oxford.

At the time BMW said its new model would have ‘a powerful electric motor’.

Oxford Mail:

BMW AG chairman of the board of management Harald Krüger said: “The systematic electrification of the brand and product portfolio is a mainstay of the BMW Group’s next strategy.

“The Mini Electric concept offers a thrilling preview of the all-electric production vehicle.

“Mini and electrification make a perfect match.”
