Young trick-or-treaters are being warned about the dangers of Halloween.

Primary school children are receiving a lesson in how to stay safe this Autumn - and are being warned not to become a nuisance to others.

Telling youngsters about the hazards of trick or treating and using fireworks are Thames valley Police Community Support Officers Mark Wakeford and Sue Bradshaw.

The pair are visiting every primary school in Abingdon before Halloween to get the message across - and are organising a family fun day at the end of the month.

PCSO Bradshaw said: "We have been taking a presentation to schools, concentrating on years six and seven which teaches children about dangers and antisocial issues of fireworks and Halloween celebrations.

"We also explain how to have a safe and enjoyable Halloween."

A family fun day with fire fighters will be held at Abingdon Fire Station, Ock Street, between 10am and 2pm on October 27.

DON'T FORGET

  • Always go trick or treating with an adult
  • Don't talk to strangers on the street
  • Only go to houses where you or your friends know the residents
  • Don't enter any house, stay on the doorstep
  • Don't knock on doors where there is a sign saying "No trick or treat here"
  • Although Halloween is supposed to be spooky, be careful not to frighten elderly people
  • Stay in areas that are lit with street lights and take a torch with you just in case
  • Always look carefully before crossing the road, even if you are part of a group
  • Stay with your friends - don't split into smaller groups unless an adult goes with you
  • Be visible
  • Remember - not everyone will have sweets, but you should always be polite.
