A man was killed as he walked along an unlit road near Oxford last night.

It is the second time in less than a week a pedestrian has died after colliding with a car while walking along a busy road.

The man in his 20s was walking on the A40 Oxford Road near Camp Corner towards the services at junction 8 of the M40 at about 8.25pm.

He was involved in a collision with purple Peugeot 206 and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The pedestrian has not been formally identified but is believed to be from Thame.

The stretch of the A40, which is unlit, was closed for about five hours.

A woman driving the car was treated for shock and has not been arrested.

Police spokesman Victoria Bartlett said: "Crash investigation officers were at the scene for five hours to examine the scene and to establish exactly where the pedestrian was when he was in collision with the car."

Last week 31-year-old Jonathan Gale, of Walton Well Road in Jericho, died in a similar crash on Oxford's north eastern bypass.

Mr Gale was killed after a collision with a car while walking in the carriageway at about 4.20am on Tuesday.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the man walking in the area and have not yet contacted the police are urged to call PC James Holstead at Bicester Roads Policing via the Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505.

Witnesses can also speak anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
