A CALL has gone out for undercover agents in the city to step forward and try Oxford's latest escape hunt challenge.

The Westgate Centre welcomed the new craze of rainy-day activities when Escape Hunt Oxford opened up on the rooftop terrace last October.

It has since welcomed countless groups in their quest to use their intellect and ability to think outside the box to crack the cryptic clues and escape the confines of various rooms.

Escape Hunt Oxford started with three themed chambers, and has gradually grown to include an Alice-themed escape challenge, and one of the first official Doctor Who-themed escape rooms in the country.

Now the latest addition to the local attraction is not only asking people to think outside the box, but to go outside the box (escape room) and delve into the streets of Oxford.

The games company, which has sites across the country including Bristol, Manchester and Birmingham, has launched its summer escape ‘room’ Operation Mindfall.

The new challenge calls on players to take on the role of an undercover agent on a city-wide adventure.

Players are given 120 minutes before a deadly virus with the power to control the minds of the human race will be activated by ‘Spider Tech’.

This will be activated from a secure place in the city centre.

Players must work out how to foil the Spider Tech’s servers before it is too late.

Escape Hunt Oxford says: “Operation Mindfall is a truly unique, adrenaline-fuelled experience from Escape Hunt.

Oxford Mail:

“The game begins with a mission briefing from a talented Game Master, after which players must then race against the clock, roaming the streets of Oxford and solving a series of puzzles to save the world.”

The escape challenge uses the latest augmented reality and geolocation technology to help teams when roaming the streets of Oxford in a bid to find the anti-virus and destroy Spider Tech’s servers before its too late.

The game is open to teams of between two and four players, and it costs £45 per team.

Organisers say ‘it is perfect for friends, workmates or family members looking for a unique experience this summer’.

The room is the latest in a line of escape challenges set up at its base in the Westgate, but is the first to take the challenge outside the shop.

Original escape room themes include Blackbeard’s Treasure in which players must seek out the pirate’s treasure while evading detection, The Fourth Samurai which challenges players to defeat the evil warlord Tanaka Masamune with a magic stone from the handle of his sword, or Escape the Wild West which is a quest to restart a rusty old locomotive to evade peril in the Wild West.

Escape Hunt Oxford also now boasts the Doctor Who room Worlds Collide, where players battle the Time Lord’s oldest enemies the Cybermen after a time travel mishap causes a tear in the very fabric of space and time.

Following this, the company added an Alice in Puzzleland game in a nod to the city’s connection with the Lewis Carroll favourite.
