The England rugby squad have the full support of Conservative leader and Witney MP David Cameron.

The Tory sent the squad a letter yesterday wishing them luck in tonight's World Cup final clash with South Africa.

And, ahead of a weekend packed with sporting excitement, Mr Cameron also wrote to Grand Prix star Lewis Hamilton to wish him best wishes in securing the Formula 1 World Championship in Brazil on Sunday.

Mr Cameron's letter to the England squad read: "I would like to send my very best wishes to you all as you seek to retain the Rugby World Cup on Saturday.

"The whole country is incredibly excited and has been inspired and absorbed by your fantastic progress over the past weeks.

"Best of luck on Saturday - we will be cheering you on!"

And to Hamilton - who can secure the championship in his first season in F1 by finishing ahead of his main rivals at Interlagos on Sunday - the Tory leader wrote: "I would like to send you my very best wishes as you seek to win the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship this weekend in Brazil.

"You have already achieved so much in your first year in F1 and can be enormously proud that you are now entering the final race of the season competing for the world title. This weekend is sure to be a riveting climax to the season."
