A MAN was arrested on suspicion of arson after emergency services were called to an Oxford city centre house fire overnight.

Police and fire services attended the incident on Becket Street at about 2am, with photos showing at least three fire engines on the scene.

Nobody was injured but the 22-year-old, from Oxford, was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remains in police custody.

Thames Valley Police confirmed officers were called to the fire at 2.04am and a police scene-watch is still in place.

The manager of the nearby Becket House hotel, Joshua Jelfs, witnessed last night's incident.

He said: "I saw the incident as it woke me up from the guest house.

"I had to check it out as I had a duty to make sure the guests are safe.

"Once fire crews established [what] it was they told me, so I had no reason to worry about our building."
