THE Charlie Allum Memorial Day will return to Wallingford with a twist tomorrow.

Making its eighth return, the festival of football will see two ex Premier League players attend the enhanced offering, which this year includes two one off games as well as the main tournament.

Around 165 players are expected to attend the event from 10am at Crowmarsh Gifford Recreation Ground, in memory of the popular Wallingford footballer and manager, who died aged 55 in 2011.

The annual charity day fundraises for AMMF, which specialises in research on the form of liver cancer that Mr Allum died from.

This year will see former Wallingford Town players John Dreyer and Gary Elkins – who went on to play in the Premier League with Bradford and Wimbledon respectively – run two of the tournament teams and play in the veteran's match, held in memory of Cholsey United legend, Ronald ‘Flippy' Fox, for the second year running.

Mr Dreyer also made 60 appearances for Oxford United.

As well as that over-35s game, and the eight-team tournament, this year also features a one-off ladies' match in memory of Cholsey United favourite Harry Bonner, himself a former chairman and player alongside Ronald Fox.

Around 30 women are expected to compete in the game for the Harry Bonner trophy, while the usual family fun offerings are also returning.

The popular summer charity event will once again be organised by Charlie Allum's family, including his son and current manager of Cholsey United Football Club, Chris Allum.

He explained: "It has been wonderful to see how the Memorial Day has continued to grow since it first began in 2011.

"From the beginning, the intention was simple and heartfelt: we wanted to celebrate and remember my father and his love of ‘the beautiful game' and also to use the event as a platform to raise awareness of a rare and devastating cancer."

He added: "It started as a one off game and just grew and grew. It seemed fitting this year that we could play for a ladies match in the name of club legend Harry Bonner."

Spectators will be treated to a raffle, tombola, barbecue, bouncy castle, family photo boards, refreshment tent, outdoor bar and ice cream van.

The first game kick off at 11am, with the Ronald Fox veterans match beginning just after 1pm and the Harry Bonner Ladies game starting around 30 minutes later.

AMMF, the UK's only cholangiocarcinoma charity, campaigns to raise awareness of the world's second most common primary liver cancer, and encourages and supports research.

Chris, his family and friends, have so far helped raise almost £37,000 for the organisation through various fundraisers including the memorial day, and various marathons and half marathons.

CEO Helen Morement said: "This fantastic family friendly event is fast becoming a key diary date for the summer.

"We are so grateful to Chris and all the Allum family for their invaluable support in ensuring we are able to continue our work."
