NIGHT photography is not the easiest of skills to master but Camera Club rose to the challenge this week to provide a plethora of nocturnal scenes.

Stars featured in many shots, with one of our favourites circular star trails above the former Upper Heyford water tower by Andy Smith.

Another picture of a celestial object we loved was Allen Dannfald's image of the moon, which captured an impressive amount of detail on Earth's nearest neighbour.

Another natural phenomenon that lights up the night sky could be found in Everson Leandro Mendes' striking shot of a snaking flash of lightning in Palazzo Ducale, Mantua, Italy.

Just because our theme was night didn't mean snappers shied away from colour.

The stunning purple sky above Minster Lovell bleeding into dusky pinks and blues by Gordon Craig was a particular favourite.

Oxford Mail:

Bob Girling, meanwhile, showcased the beauty of the Ridgway with his spectacular shot which captured a vast expanse of sky above the landscape.

The remaining hint of warm light low on the horizon helping to illuminate the field below.

Less natural sources of colour could be found in pretty fairy lights decorating a fence by Becca Collacott and Nadine Mayer's beautiful photograph of fireworks reflected in water.

A perfectly composed shot, the little silhouetted boat in the middle of the shot draws the eye to the source of the light show.

Oxford Mail:

Many members chose to focus on the fun to be had when the sun goes down, with crowds enjoying a performance at Blenheim Palace's Nocturne in Steve Blake's submission.

The fun of the fair in Wallingford, meanwhile, was captured by Derek Bird in his picture of families clustered around a whirling ride.

Finally, an unusual shot we loved was Shez McKechnie's black and white image of a songbird sitting on a branch with the moon in the background.

Oxford Mail:

Next week's theme, now that we look set for some hot weather, is 'summer'.
